Instructional Services Librarian

Carson-Newman College invites applicants for an Instructional Services Librarian in the Stephens-Burnett Memorial Library.  The position is a full-time, ten-month, tenure track position to begin August 2010.

Candidates for the position must have an ALA-accredited master’s degree, a passion for information literacy, substantial teaching experience preferably in an academic library, recent reference experience in an academic library with numerous electronic resources, knowledge of instructional technology, eagerness to incorporate emerging technologies in library services and instruction, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Carson-Newman employs faculty and staff who are actively supportive, through a local church, of its aim as a college with a Christian commitment.

Candidates for the position of assistant professor will provide the majority of the library’s information literacy instruction to the College community, assess and promote the library’s information literacy program, collaborate with faculty and other librarians in the design and delivery of library instruction, provide reference service, share evening and weekend duties (one evening per week and two or three weekends per semester), and serve on Library and College committees.

The salary will be commensurate with educational preparation and experience.  Group life and health insurance as well as a 401K retirement plan are available on a participating basis.

Administrative Services Assistant III

Supervisor:  Assistant State Archivist, Director of Technical Services, and Director of Archival Technical Services

Summary: Responsible for administrative support for three diverse sections.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for purchases, payments and monitoring of department supplies and published materials ordered for the collection, and for entering basic records into the library on line cataloging system.
  • Responsible for maintaining files of materials purchased for the collection, gifts given to the collection, and sending appropriate acknowledgements.
  • Liaisons with vendors for purchases made in the three areas as well as purchases made for the collections.
  • Maintains inventory of materials in three areas.
  • Monitors accounts for budgetary purposes and keeps departments advised of expenditures.
  • Prepares requests for travel, makes motor pool reservations, and submits reimbursement claims for travel.
  • Maintains personnel, attendance, and leave records.
  • Prepares correspondence as needed.
  • Receives and routes telephone calls and visitors.
  • Coordinates the day to day necessities need to keep the three sections operating.
  • Maintains the copy and fax machine.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

                                   
Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:  Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree. Qualifying full-time increasingly responsible sub-professional experience or para-professional or professional experience may be substituted for the required education, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of four years.

Knowledge and Abilities:  Advanced computer skills. Knowledge of basic computer software: Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel. Knowledge of office machines and their requirements. Knowledge of filing, file maintenance, and good general office procedures. Overall knowledge and correct usage of spelling and grammar. Ability to following written and oral instructions. Ability to manage various tasks throughout the day. Ability to learn and use library automations system, automated databases, and other software. Ability to communicate clearly and pleasantly with staff and public. Ability to work with vendors and publishers. Ability to coordinate the clerical needs of three sections. Ability to coordinate the purchase requests for materials ordered throughout the building. Ability to be a positive influence within the building and sections. Ability to unpack and lift materials from boxes up to 30 pounds. Ability to bend and lift materials onto cards or move them to various areas. Ability to work in an environment with books that contain dust and other allergens.

Archival Assistant III

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assists the General Assembly, staff and the public in person, in writing, via email and by telephone by answering reference questions from simple to complex.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills as a representative of the State Library and Archives and its collections and policies to the public
  • Performs general reference services such as greeting the public, handling routine history and genealogy inquiries, and suggesting research strategies to patrons.
  • Provides access to microfilm collections, using and assisting patrons with equipment
  • Retrieves and files materials.
  • Staffs a Public Service desk in the Microfilm Room, including a minimum of one Saturday per month.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:  Must possess a high-school diploma or GED.
Must possess experience equivalent to two years of full-time office/clerical or library/archival work of which one year must have been in library work or the archiving and storage of original documents.  Additional post-secondary education may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis for the required general experience. Experience in genealogy or Tennessee history desired.

Knowledge and Abilities:  Possesses skills in researching print and microfilm sources and websites for the purpose of gathering and collating data for patrons. Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills. Possesses skills in intermediate to advanced computer operations. Communicates complex information to individuals and small groups.  Applies sound analytical thinking to problem solving.

Assistant Director, Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing daily onsite operations including coordinating and supervising circulation and reader advisory staff.
  • Planning, initiating and evaluating library programs.
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of an automated circulation system.
  • Compiling statistical data.
  • Participating in collection development and maintenance, including weeding and inventory functions.
  • Other duties include administering the LPBH program in the absence of the Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:  The successful candidate must have an ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent from an accredited college or university.  Five years experience in professional library work in an increasingly responsible position, and knowledge of library automation experience with online systems and resources is required.  Preference will be given to those with supervisory experience in a library for the blind and physically handicapped or public library.

Knowledge and Abilities:  Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
Possesses intermediate to advanced skills in computer operations. Can create and present programs for the public to promote the services of LBPH.  Ability to move and lift materials up to 20 pounds. Ability to stoop, bend and lift to file and retrieve materials. Ability to walk extensively in the stacks.

Digital Materials Librarian I

Summary: Oversee the long-term management of TSLA’s digital materials and resources.  Propose, plan, and develop a digital preservation program for TSLA's collections of enduring value in digital format: establish policies and best practices for the long term protection and access to digital materials of all types, both created by or acquired by the Library & Archive, including text, images, data, audio-visual resources, web pages, and ephemera. Working closely with Preservation Services to implement, monitor, and maintain the digital preservation program. The Digital Materials Librarian will assume a key role in the creation and development of a trustworthy repository of digital resources. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the ongoing development of requirements and specifications, including formats and metadata, for digital material TSLA solicits, accepts, or purchases into its collections, and advise both staff and external content creators on strategies and the practical implementation of those specifications. 
  • Participates in collection development with primary responsibility for the Collection Development policy as it pertains to electronic resources. Performs cataloging of electronic materials, using proper descriptive cataloging, AACR2 rules, LC classification, and LC subject headings.  Supervises input of bibliographic information with OCLC and the library online catalog (LARC).
  • Will track developments in metadata standards as well as recommend and design appropriate metadata schema (e.g., DC, MARC, MODS) to facilitate access to electronic resources and other collections.  Works closely with others to implement newly adopted metadata schema.
  • Advise staff and digital initiatives on all phases of the life cycle of digital content with the aim of long term retention and access; provide training or orientations. Represent and champion digital preservation interests across the library, the archive, and to the community.
  • Prepare proposals for external funding for digital preservation projects. Develop specifications for vended services that support the digital preservation program; evaluate responses to proposals for such services and make recommendations for selecting vendors; and act on behalf of TSLA as a technical liaison on preservation issues to vendors providing digital materials. Represent TSLA in cooperative projects or programs in digital preservation.
  • Research and inform TSLA staff on contingency plans against threats to the digital      collections, such as industry changes to file formats, natural disaster, and security breaches.
  • Stay current on developing technologies, standards, and practice in preservation of digital materials and resources; recommend responses to these developments through periodic alerts, summaries, reports, and revisions to policies and procedures. Represent TSLA in forums on digital preservation at the state, regional, national, or international level.
  • Other duties will be assigned as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:  Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university. The successful candidate will have broad knowledge of cataloging principles and of non-MARC metadata schemas (particularly MODS, Dublin Core, or EAD), standards, best practices, and applications. Advanced coursework in Cataloging preferred.  Knowledge of library data systems, computer software, bibliographic and authority control. Knowledge of trends impacting libraries, archives, and technology, particularly in regards to digitization and digital preservation. Demonstrated knowledge of the lifecycle management of digital material; an understanding of issues related to digital formats, media, and migration is required, along with an aptitude for quickly mastering technical topics. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Highly motivated individual.
Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to work collegially are essential.

Knowledge and Abilities: Ability to lift a minimum of twenty pounds and move loaded book trucks (about 180 books). Ability to bend and lift materials onto stacks both in high and low positions. Ability to work in stack environment with books that contain dust and other allergens.

Outreach Services Librarian - King College, Bristol, TN

King College, a private, comprehensive college founded in the Presbyterian tradition, is inviting applications for an Outreach Services Librarian, a full-time faculty position at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor.  Duties include coordinating and promoting off-campus library services to King College students, faculty, and staff at extended campus sites; providing in-person and online library instruction to students and faculty at off-campus sites; serving as a collection development liaison to assigned academic departments; participating in reference desk rotation and managing Kingsport Site Library.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited master's degree in library and/or information science is required and three years of professional experience. The successful candidate will have knowledge of a wide range of print and electronic information resources, demonstrated teaching experience; experience with course management systems, web page development, and other instructional technology software; ability to work efficiently and effectively in a team-based environment as well as juggle multiple priorities in a busy, time-sensitive environment.    Salary commensurate with education and experience.
